In June 2017 we travelled to Norway. We spent a couple of weeks in southern Norway and then flew to Spitsbergen, an island approximately 600 miles north of northern Norway. Our main goal for the trip was to go on an Arctic expedition cruise around the island of Spitsbergen, but our time in southern Norway was fantastic too.
Iceland was first settled in the 9th and 10 centuries by Scottish and Irish. For most of the time since then they were under control of Norway or Denmark. They did have the first official continuously operating parliament which met outside for the first time in the year 930 AD and the parliament voted in the year 1000 for the country to become Christian. Now around 75% are Lutheran. They finally got independence June 17, 1944.
